Kinds of Mulch

Garden mulch is an organic covering used to retain the moisture in the garden soil.  Mulch naturally degrades overtime, and nutrients are absorbed by the soil and directly contribute to the longevity of garden plants. Well laid garden mulch is be used to improve the aesthetics of a home garden without spending a lot of money.

Mulch can be created from a variety of organic materials such as; animal manure, newspapers, garden clippings, straw, or regular compost.

Benefits of Using Mulch:
Shredded barks are mulch acquired from fallen tress which keeps the soil moist and fairly cool, and is also used for low-lying shrubs.

Animal manure is an excellent source of plant nutrients. It is considered as “side dressing” and is applied sparingly. Fresh or partially composted manure can poison plants because of its acidity.

Garden clippings are used as preventive measures against weeds.

Shredded newspapers are good in keeping the plant roots cool and moist during transfers.

Composted leaves is the most popular and practical choice in mulching. It can be placed on garden beds before winter months, and on colder months, it will continue to protect the soil and decompose, keeping the nutrient balance in the soil.
